NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Thursday that the league has reached an agreement with the National Hockey League’s AHL affiliate in New York for the 2018-19 season.
Bettman made the announcement at a news conference in New Jersey.
The NHL has been in negotiations with the AHL on new affiliation deals for the upcoming season, including an expansion franchise.
The league has been exploring the possibility of expanding to 14 teams in the United States for a few years now, but has yet to make a formal announcement.
The AHL is in the process of acquiring three teams in New Hampshire, New Jersey and Connecticut.
The AHL is owned by the NHL, which has said it is open to expansion in the future.
